Inaugural Legends of Runeterra META High School Esports champion has been crowned

Kuan "How Sad is ADC" Van Vulpen was crowned the winner on Sunday, June 20

A year 10 student from Melbourne High School has won the first Legends of Runeterra (LoR) META tournament.

Kuan “How Sad is ADC” Van Vulpen took home the championship after going through the losers bracket to pull off an upset against a higher rated opponent.

Van Vulpen said it “feels good” to be known as the first LoR winner for META High School Esports.

“I beat someone quite a bit higher ranked than me so I feel accomplished. I also had a fun time because I met quite a few cool guys. It was just a fun experience,” he told Snowball.

The student who balances gaming with his studies and commitments such as going to the gym spoke highly of the tournament, even receiving recognition from a few friends on his success.

“Quite a few of my friends congratulated me, I got a bit of recognition. Otherwise I do really like participating in esports as it’s something I find very fun.

“My experience with META has been great as well, the staff are professional and organised. The people participating were also quite nice.”

The tournament featured a format in which players used three decks with Kuan utilising decks that paired Irelia and Azir, Vladimir with Braum and Thresh alongside Nasus.

Kuan had some pointers for those trying to climb the ladder after the shift in the Legends of Runeterra metagame.

“With the new patch just rolling around, the meta shifted a lot. Decks like Midrange Nasus/Thresh and Irelia/Azir seem quite a bit worse, ‘The Watcher’, was also quite heavily nerfed so I can’t really tell. Ekko could be powerful in a predict based midrange/combo deck. I think Bilgewater might also make a comeback because they buffed a couple of the mana costs. Ionia also had a few buffs so it’s entirely possible for something like Lee Sin to come back in the meta.

“Generally my favorite decks are Swain/Yasuo combo decks, Vlad/Braum decks and agro Draven/Riven with Ionia. Especially with the latter, as the Ionia cards were heavily buffed. However, to climb I’ve been using a Mono-Fiora deck with freljord.”
