The LCO returns today for the seventh week of Split 2, 2022. At today’s conclusion, the second round-robin will be complete, giving each team one final chance to play each other and improve their standings in what is becoming a hotly contested playoff race.
Peace (7-6) looks to keep up in the fight for finals as they take on the still-winless Gravitas (0-13).
The undefeated Chiefs (13-0) will be aiming to keep their perfect split going as they take on the inform Kanga line-up (6-7), who only a couple of weeks ago looked to be all but out of the hunt, but now find themselves a contender for the bracket stage.
Rounding out the night, Order (8-5), who find themselves in sole possession of second place coming into today, look to retain second as they take on Mammoth (4-9), who will need every win possible if they want to make a competitive appearance at DreamHack.
Game of the day goes to the opening contest, as Pentanet and Dire Wolves clash in what has the potential to be a split defining contest.
Taylor’s Game of the Week: Pentanet (7-6) v Dire Wolves (7-6)
After starting off week six in sole possession of second place in the standings, Dire Wolves come into week seven finding themselves back in a multi-team tie — this time for third place.
Tonight they’ll look to break this tie, or at very least make it only a two-team tie, as they take on Pentanet.
Pentanet had a mixed round in week six, going 1-1. Their first game against Gravitas wasn’t much to write about — like most games featuring this struggling team — as Pentanet cruised to a clean 25-minute victory.
Their second game saw them come up against a resurgent Peace, who were able to clean up this game, with Pentanet not really in the contest at all.
This week in-week out inconsistency become a theme of the 2021 MSI heroes. The team has failed to post a lossless week since the very first week of this split, with their super week seeing them post only one win against the lowly Mammoth.
In fact, they only have a single win against a team currently in a playoff position this split, back in week two against Order.
It’s not like every single one of their losses has been a blowout either; sure, some certainly have been, but other games were far too close than they should have been, and came down to either a single instance that won or lost them the game.
If Pentanet wants to get their second win against a playoff opponent, this may be their best opportunity yet. The Dire Wolves had what was their first truly rough week of the split last week, posting their first winless week thus far.
Monday saw them lose a close contest against Order, in what was a back and forth affair, before losing their game Tuesday against the Chiefs, in which, well, you can probably guess what happened — they played The Chiefs.
Both teams will desperately want this win, as getting this win could be the leg up they need when it comes to the playoff race as we enter the final round robin. Every win will matter for both of these teams moving forward, and a win against another potential playoff hopeful will be doubly so.
I expect this game to be close and come down to better execution in game and a better draft. It’s really a coinflip for me who will win, but I think Pentanet will squeak out the win. Just.
