Mount Albert Grammar School Win META New Zealand Rocket League Regional Finals

Mount Albert Grammar School have qualified for the META Rocket League Championship Round where they’ll be taking on the best schools across Australia and New Zealand.

Having fought hard to overcome Westlake Boys High School in a best of seven series, the boys from Mount Albert are high on confidence on their chances of taking out the competition.

Having lost the grand final last year to South Australia’s Unley High — led by Aiden “delusioN” Hendry — Mount Albert Grammar came into the 2020 season looking for the revenge hitback. Their ambitions have only been helped by delusioN’s absence from the games, and their own signing of Year 11 student “AppleCrash,” who plays for Forbidden Esports.

The opportunity to compete at the Melbourne Esports Open last year was something Mount Albert team captain Darth Drewbie told Snowball Esports won’t forget any time soon.

“It was a cool, but incredibly loud environment. It made it difficult to communicate!” the Rocket League star said. “Meeting people who were fans of the esport and soaking up the atmosphere was great, it’s just unfortunate we were beaten on the day.”

Being able to play at big events isn’t the only thing that META has handed Darth either. He’s all in on “helping teammates,” as well as building up his own in-game leadership skills.

“I’ve had to learn to lead a team, I’ve been appointed team captain and have to bear being responsible for my teammates, and ensuring people are in the right headspace and help build out an inclusive team environment,” he said.

Drewbie’s leadership on the pitch is reflected by taking a more reserved and tactical approach to the game, trying to fill defensive holes while his mechanically gifted team mates wreak havoc on opposition defenses further up the field.

As for what’s next after the META competition for the New Zealand student in his last year of schooling, he has his eyes on an Advanced Bachelor of Science at the University of Auckland.

You can follow Darth and his teammates progress through the rest of the META High School tournament on the league portal.
