This Saturday, two of the best high school teams in Oceania will face off to crown the META High School Esports Rocket League champion.
New Zealanders and tournament favourites Mount Albert Grammar School will take on Victoria’s Yarra Valley Grammar in the META HSE Rocket League Championship Final.
Mount Albert Grammar will be full of confidence having not dropped a match during the qualifying championship rounds. Their opponents, Yarra Valley, had an early slip-up in their qualification, but went on an impressive unbeaten run to secure their spot in the final.
The teams didn’t meet in the Championship rounds meaning this will be the first time this year these two schools face off in the finals format with both teams in scintillating form.
Brando, the Yarra Valley Grammar captain has looked fondly at their experience in the Championship Rounds with it being the highlight of their season.
“My personal favourite moment from this season is coming back from the losers bracket and making it to the grand final,” he said.
Winning META has extra meaning for the Yarra Valley squad. Not only will it be their team’s first title, but it’ll be the school’s as a whole. “It would mean a lot to my team and I, but also mean a whole lot to win the first-ever esports title for our school”
However, they’ll just take it one step at a time.
“We have heard all the high praise of the opposing team and we are just trying to really build up team chemistry to play some great rocket league.”
Across the Tasman, Mount Albert Grammar’s captain Drewbie says their drive at commitment this year has guided them to their success and should help them this weekend
“We like to get into the groove of getting together most nights to practice, this just helps our goal of improving as a team at the top of our minds.
“In terms of the tournament, we’re very driven to win it this year after how close we came to winning it last year, it’s sort of like a gap that needs to be filled.”
